Holy caped crusaders, Batman! It's Batman!

My friend Robert once told me that when he was a kid, he would walk in New York City looking at the rooftops, hoping to see Spider-Man. Well, I saw someone that REALLY made the trip to NYC really worthwhile:

It's Batman! Batman's real! There he is on his...er...Bat-bicycle! (I guess the economy really hit everybody hard, even billionaire playboys/masked vigilantes.) I literally stopped on the street when I saw him! We were on 5th St. between St. Patrick's Cathedral and Rockefeller Plaza. That was way cool!

Now to look for Spider-Man...

Geek Expedition in New York

God was gracious to have my friend Paul and me to both be in New York at the same time for about two days so we planned to go on a "geek expedition." Divine Providence was at work when I forgot to give Paul our apartment number and, as he waited at the door of the building, my sister and mom were going out. They opened the door for him and even gave him directions to the apartment. God is good, even in seemingly frivolous things.

We were heading for Toys R Us to look for GI Joe action figures (me) and video games (Paul) when we saw, en route, Midtown Comics.

It was great there. Wish I had money to buy stuff.

Then we finally hit Toys R Us.

Update on the Iron Man 2 epilogue

WARNING: SPOILERS

As is typical with these Marvel movies, there's almost always something at the end of the credits, a kind of teaser for things to come. This time, in Iron Man 2, we have a huge crater and, at the edge, we see Mjolnir, the war hammer of the Mighty Thor! Oh yeah, that really got fans excited. Then a friend of mine sent me a link that really gave me a major geekgasm:

Yes, folks, there is a Thor movie in the works!

I simply love living in this era!

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter -- Putting Vampires in Their Place

WARINING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS!

June 25 1828 -- So long as this country is cursed with slavery, so too will it be cursed with vampires.

Thus reads one line from one of Abraham Lincoln's supposedly secret journals. For Abraham Lincoln is a vampire hunter.

At least, he is in the novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith. It is a novel I find very hard to put down. It is a breath of fresh air from what vampires have become in our contemporary popular culture.

What has become of the vampire?

Deconstruction has made us view old things in new ways, but it has also made us question, even go against, the very truth of absolute good and evil so much so that everything is now blurred.

Such is what happened with vampires.

Up to the mid-twentieth century, vampires are considered evil, spawns of "an evil alchemy of the blood." The very concept of creatures feeding exclusively on blood is abominable biblically speaking (See Genesis 9:6; Leviticus 17:14; Deuteronomy 12:23. I'm guessing this is the basis for Bram Stoker's concept of "Dracula."). Then there came those who, bored by the status quo and enamored by the dark and seductive beauty of such gothic creatures, embraced a more gothic and vampiric lifestyle.

A review of the Macross VF1-S Battroid I got free from Jollibee

I was walking down EDSA near Boni Avenue when I saw the banner on Jollibee that made my heart skip a beat: Macross toys free with every Jollibee Kids Meal!

At first I was hesitant. Kids Meal toys ware rarely of good quality play-wise and durability-wise. The Voltron torso and legs that I got are testament to that. Still, I did text my buddies about it and the reaction was unanimous: they want them! I eventually warmed up to the idea so my friend Nix (with the blessing of his wife) and I decided to go out during our afternoon break to get them toys.

Fast forward to 1515 hours. As a gesture of good will, and since they were planning to order anyway, I asked my other colleagues if they wanted anything from Jollibee. They gave their orders and I ended up doing a mini workout carrying bags of food and drinks and toys. Here's an idea of what they ordered:

The things I do for toys. It's almost insane.

Anyway, I did manage to get me a VF1-S Battroid. As expected, it wasn't transformable. Here's a pic of it in the bag:

Taking it out of the bag, the VF1-S comes with 3 accessories: the rifle cannon, a booster, and a booster with twin cannons

02-03-10_1642

Put them all together, it does make a pretty picture, even with limited articulation.

02-03-10_1645

It's slightly taller than a GI Joe, maybe 3.80 inches.

By the way, the cannon features a trigger that makes a small yellow thing pop out of the barrel ever so slightly to simulate firing energy blasts according to the plastic package. I tried it and what I think it simulates I cannot say here as there may be kids reading this.

Overall, I think it's an ok toy, more suited for guys like me who grew up with this stuff. (First Transformers, then Voltron, now Macross. What's next, Voltes V?)I'm sure by now you will find this toy on display on some office desks, most likely occupied by 20- to 30-something guys and gals who aren't afraid to show off their geek side.

Rescue at Wardoff Manor 1

(Here's the first of the Tales of the Second Blood War. It's a work in progress so please bear with me.)

“Very well, I shall pay you 25 ductis a night if you would sing and tell stories to my patrons as they dine here.” the gruff orc said in his guttural voice to the olive-skinned woman seated across the table from him. The woman nodded and smiled. “You are most gracious Master Ebon. I will do my best to keep your patrons happy.” she said.

Ebon the orc stood up and raised his right fist to his left chest, saying, “Then I welcome you, Lady Anya, to the Red Hare Tavern and Inn. May your song bring gladness to us in these troublesome times.”

Anya stood and answered the orc with the same Gromon salute-greeting. “I thank you, Master Ebon for your accommodation and your employment. Be assured that I will do my best to entertain your guests and ease their burdens.”

Ebon called to the boy cleaning a nearby table, “Karl! Please show our new bard to her room and make sure she’s comfortable.” Karl left his cleaning rag and walked over to Anya as she picked up her lute and a sack containing her belongings. Anya followed Karl through the musty corridors, thinking that she’s been in better places, not to mention better paid. But ever since the Asperian invasion — the attack of “the demons from the western sea” because Asperians are a vampire-like race — and the occupation of the islands of Margon and Seleniel, as well as the city state of Sorma, the land of Pentapotamo was plunged into war. Nobles have been called to command armies or have begun to barricade themselves, so bards no longer find themselves called upon to entertain in the halls of the rich and aristocratic humans and the gnomes. The elves have their own music and the orcs have little use for such things, and none of the four races found need for tales and music at a time like this. The bards now have to walk the roads to tell stories and sing in whatever tavern, inn or eating place they can find that is still standing, if they are to have coin to eat and live.

Karl opened a door and let Anya in, handing her the iron key to her room. Anya looked at the key, recognizing the short, serrated-blade design as gnomish, specifically Kodayni. Old design, but still useful, and far better than anything the human smiths of city states of Sorma, Hanathai, or Margon ever came up with. Having spent some time with the gnomes of Kodayn, Anya was familiar with the Kodayni gadgets and devices, and how jealously protective Kodayni gnomes can get with them. Thus, only devices that are at least ten years old are sold outside of Kodayn, and usually at exorbitant prices. So this inn is not so shabby after all, thought Anya, to be able to afford Kodayni locks for its doors. Anya lay on the bed and began thinking of what she would play for the patrons that night. . .

* * * * *

“Sing for us, bard! Sing of the good old times, when life was peaceful!”

Anya wryly smiled. She expected as much from Ebon’s patrons, mostly refugees fleeing from Asperian-occupied Sorma. From her travels that crisscross the Nine Cities, she knew that such “good old times” never existed as there always were small wars between the Cities over land, trade, and ancient grudges about who stole whose sheep or wife among the various nobles and whose breakaway kin was protected by whose city. But then, these were conflicts of the artistocrats that rarely affect the peasantry. But the Asperian invasion, now dubbed as the Second Blood War, affected noble and peasant alike. The vampiric fangs of the Asperians make no distinction between noble and peasant blood, both are food to them.

Anya thought of the vampyr invaders, then of the refugees fleeing them that are now before her, and began to sing.

Making Comics using Action Figures

I just came from a meeting/creative session with other members of Polyhedron Comics (visit cadrecomics.multiply.com and polyhedron-comics.deviantart.com). We're coming out with a comics anthology where I am writing one of the stories. I'll write about that in much detail in a later entry.

This entry is about using action figures in the making of comics.

The Second Blood War: Prologue

(This is the campaign that I started. I'm using the Generic Universal Role-Playing System or GURPS so as not to offend the sensibilities of my Christian players)
------------------------------------------------------------
Chronicles of the Second Blood War

Twenty-fifth day of the sixth moon, five hundred fifteenth anno.

I, Martius, Royal Scribe to his Majesty Cirio, King of Sorma, set forth these chronicles that future generations may know of the events that befell the realm of Sorma and the city that bears its name during these dark and terrible days.

May El have mercy on us.

Fifty years have passed since the end of the First Blood War, with the fall of the last sanguinary at Eschenburg and the death of the accursed vampyr lord Mircea von Eschenwien. This land has been cleansed by the noble Paladins of the holy order of Machaira Agios, and King Dario had defenses built on Hohen Eschenburg that overlooks the Sea of Cordonia to the west. Peace has come upon the land with El’s blessing.

But treachery is afoot, and serpents have come unmasked in these last days. Three strangers came and undid the Sormacian defenses at Hohen Eschenburg. These vile traitors opened the door for Asperian ships to land on our blessed shores. Legions of Asperian sanguinari, better known as vampyr, overran Eschenburg and drove away the lord of that land, Baron Krieg von Eschenwien. From here, the Asperian General Jaskom, rumored to be a warrior mage, sent emissaries to our King demanding the unconditional surrender of all of Sorma. Our valiant King Cirio defied Jaskom and drew back all citizens into the city of Sorma.

Jaskom advanced, pillaging and occupying all lands in his path. The Odosian ministers failed to do anything against the demonic Asperian onslaught. The best they can do is encourage the Sormacian citizens besieged behind the walls of Sorma. Agion Paladins have fallen in great numbers, and no more than two hosts are here with us in the city, together with five hosts of Sormacian knights. The city is besieged.

King Cirio has sent riders to the Hall of Archons in Astheniel to ask for aid from the other cities, while the High Bishop Ireneus has called for continuous prayer and fasting from his sanctuary in the Great Odosian Temple of El.

By surrender or by Asperian fang and sword, Sorma will fall in days.

Living in two worlds

After coming from church today, I wasn't feeling too good. I slept it off after lunch and still felt a little lousy afterwards. Nevertheless I faced what needed to be faced and  sat down and watched the first two episodes of Voltes V and, after dinner, GI Joe: The Pyramid of Darkness.

And then it hits me: I want to game.

Yeah, currently I'm building a medieval fantasy campaign using GURPS, but I'd like to play, not GM. And besides, there's no one to play with where I am,  so the matter is moot.

But I am nonetheless glad I'm into RPGs. It sounds escapist, but I like living in two worlds: this contemporary one, and the fantasy world where I can be whoever and whatever I choose to be, within context of course. It's like when the contemporary world gets too much on my nerves, I go to the fantasy world. After I get psychologically and emotionally recharged in the fantasy world, I can go back to the contemporary world and more powerfully deal with the issues, dilemmas and duties that await me.

I can't help seeing the parallelism of what I do to taking a vacation. A vacation may be set in the contemporary world, but it is no less a fantasy, living for a short while a life that is far more removed from your own.

In similar fashion, it is like coming into the presence of God, where all else pale in comparison to the awesome reality that is God. And then we find rest and recharge.

I do all three, depending on what the situation requires and/or allows. And no, I do not see it as escapism. I believe it is more like a tactical retreat to regroup and recoup resources. I think it is healthy to see this contemporary world as not being the only world. Living with one foot in one world and another in another is beneficial to live a fuller life.

Which reminds me, I need to go into the Presence now.

(postscript: you may have noticed that I avoided using the term "the real world." That was deliberate. I will talk about that in a later blog.)

25 years of GI Joe and it's only now that I got to play

The year was 2007, and something happened that I thought never would: the GI Joe of my youth was back!

I distinctly remember being into GI Joe in 1987, when I was in my second year of high school. But a minimal allowance and limited family budget (not to mention the pressure of "growing up") kept the number of my Joe figures small. I had a version 2 Snake Eyes and a version 1 Storm Shadow. When one of my cousins migrated to the US, he left me a Jinx and an Iceberg and some loose accessories. Only the rich kids got a lot of figures. Vehicles and playsets were under the category "Asa ka pa!" ("In your dreams!"). That era ended with some good times, albeit limited.

Geeks are Creatures of Passion and Commitment

I want to start off this blog by showing aspects of geeks that many do not consider: their passion and their commitment

A geek is a person with a passion for specific interests, interests that are often not in tune with those of popular culture. Thus we have fantasy geeks, science fiction geeks, sports geeks, computer geeks, anime geeks, manga geeks, tech geeks, comics geeks, wrestling geeks, martial arts geeks, and many others. Many mistake that it is the interest that characterizes the geek.
